Real connections in the worst circumstances can produce understanding and create lifetime friendships. That is the spirit behind the Tomodachi Initiative, a partnership born out of the East Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011 and the cooperation among Japan and its friends — or “tomodachi” — demonstrated during the recovery.
