Honda Engineer Mentors Co-workers and Community Members

At Honda R&D Americas, LLC (HRA), leaders don’t just manage—they mentor. HRA engineer Maurice Moulton actively shares his advice and wisdom with colleagues, an African-American business resource group at Honda, and an international fraternity to help individuals achieve their full potential.

A manager of engineering operations at HRA, Moulton says he personally experienced the benefits of having a mentor and wants to “pay it forward.”  He views mentoring as critical to helping Honda associates tap into their talents, passions and dreams, helping spark their creativity and innovation.

“When you have Honda associates who are operating closer to their potential, they are more fully utilizing their energy to be more productive,” Moulton said. “That leads to more robust solutions for the engineering challenges we face as a company and as a society.”

Moulton also serves as the advisor and co-chair of the African-American Resource Collaborative of Honda (AARCH), a business resource group at HRA that helps associates grow within the company and positively influence Honda and their local communities.

In the community, Moulton is the keeper of records for the Columbus, Ohio alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., founded in 1911 for black male college students who were being marginalized on college campuses. Today, with mentors like Moulton, the fraternity helps raise the ambition of young men of all colors, creeds and nationalities by encouraging honorable achievement in all endeavors.

Moulton says he is grateful that Honda’s culture prioritizes relationships—both inside and outside the company—which creates an environment where colleagues and community members are more engaged in improving society. His involvement with the fraternity has given him an appreciation of brotherhood and how listening to different approaches to solve the same problem can result in a better solution.

“We shouldn’t take for granted the interactions we have with each other,” he said. “We don’t know what that small act of kindness will do.”

Moulton is the latest subject of the What Makes a Honda is Who Makes a Honda video series, which highlights Honda associates who use their abilities and passions to improve the world around them.
