Honda to Host National Urban League Youth Leadership Summit

Honda will host 300 students from across the nation, as part of its sponsorship of the National Urban League Youth Leadership Summit, taking place in Columbus, Ohio, July 17-20, 2018.  As part of a series of events sponsored by the National Urban League that week, Honda is hosting a “Honda Day,” July 19, where students will tour a number of Honda operations in Ohio. Students will also tour the campus of The Ohio State University (OSU) and participate in a number of academic and social activities during the week.

The Youth Leadership Summit is in conjunction with the National Urban League’s 2018 National Conference that will take place Aug. 1-4, in Columbus, Ohio. The conference is expected to draw about 20,000 people to the Columbus area.

The students attending the Youth Leadership Summit will take part in the following activities during Honda Day:

  • A tour of Honda’s Marysville Auto Plant;
  • A tour of the Honda Heritage Center Museum and Technical Development Center;
  • An NSX experience where they will have an opportunity to learn from the Honda R&D engineers who helped create the Acura NSX supercar; and
  • A tour of the Transportation Research Center (TRC), the largest independent vehicle test facility and proving grounds in the U.S.

The students also will have discussions with Honda executives and associates who work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and manufacturing (S.T.E.A.M).

“At Honda, we view it as our responsibility to help prepare the manufacturing workforce of the 21st Century, so we are excited to provide these future leaders some first-hand experience with our operations in Ohio,” said Rick Schostek, executive vice president, Honda North America, Inc. “We look forward to discussing the important role technology and STEAM careers play today and into the future.”

Schostek will kick off the week’s events July 17, with remarks at the Ohio Union on the campus of OSU.

“The Youth Leadership Summit is one of the Urban League Movement’s most important annual initiatives, and we depend upon committed and civic-minded partners like Honda who understand the importance of cultivating the next generation of business, civic and community leadership. Honda Day will be a tremendous opportunity for our young people to gain insight into the real-world application of the STEM disciplines that Urban League programs promote,” said Marc H. Morial, President & CEO, National Urban League.
