Volunteer Helps Keep Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Running
For 29 years, Honda has sponsored the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), an academic quiz bowl-style challenge for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). For many of those years, DeWayne Odom, an American Honda assistant manager of products, sales, and training, has been right there with the students, volunteering his time to make the event memorable for all involved.
Odom, who is featured in the latest What Makes a Honda is Who Makes a Honda video series, says volunteering gives him joy and watching the students at HACSC learn how to become competitors, team players, and leaders is why he devotes his time each year to preparing for the event.
“It gives a lot of pride to Honda but also it allows Honda to invest in the future minds and generations that are coming behind us,” he said.
Beyond HCASC, Odom volunteers in other areas of the community and is currently reading to students at Carson Street Academy in Carson, Calif. each month. Growing up he recognized the on-going need for role models and he is committed to making a difference in young people’s lives.
The Who Makes a Honda video series focuses on Honda associates who live out the company’s commitment to The Power of Dreams, a global theme that encourages Honda associates to conceive ideas that will create new value for customers and society and then show the determination required to bring those dreams to life. In addition, the video series spotlights the inspiring efforts of Honda associates in their work and in the community.
