Honda associates serve the community in honor of MLK National Day of Service

January 19, 2017 – Honda associates across the country once again joined together to honor the example of selfless service exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“We are just trying to be in the spirit of MLK Day and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering and making sure we give something back to the community,” said Corey Davis, an associate with Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA).

For the seventh year, HMA partnered with Hands on Birmingham to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service. This year, more than 20 associates and their families worked to help refresh Barrett Elementary School in Birmingham.

Volunteers gave a fresh coat of paint to the hallways, classrooms and outdoor areas. Many also brought their children to provide hands-on education about community pride and service.

At Honda Manufacturing of Indiana (HMIN) associates continued the legacy of service by volunteering at the Greensburg – Decatur County Public Library in Greensburg, Indiana. Volunteers handed out MLK bookmarks, and participated in coloring and crafting activities with children.

American Honda Motor Co. (AHM) associates in California volunteered their time by revitalizing the campus of Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, and beautifying a computer room for students at K Anthony Elementary School in Inglewood, Calif.

“Tomorrow when the students come in to the computer room and see the upgrades, they will be ecstatic,” said Dorothy Irving, volunteer coordinator for K Anthony Elementary School. “We are a growing school and want to continue to deliver top-notch education to our children. The efforts and contributions of Honda associates help us fulfill our commitment to students.”

A popular activity in years past, associates at AHM headquarters in Torrance and the Chino Support Center also returned to stuffing comfort pillows for The Painted Turtle, a summer camp for children with chronic illnesses in Lake Hughes, Calif. More than 400 pillows were created by volunteers, and for the first time, associates are invited to help deliver the pillows to The Painted Turtle in February.

At the Honda Federal Credit Union in Torrance, associates put together race car kits for the children and associates at American Honda Finance decorated CD cases and bags to take to kids in hospitals. In Alpharetta, Ga. and Troy, Ohio, associates created blankets to be donated to local children’s charities.
