Honda fuels students’ dreams with new scholarships
A recent $100,000 gift to The Ohio State University from American Honda Motor Co. will fund as many as 20 new scholarships over three years to help students achieve their dreams of becoming Buckeye engineers.
Supporting diversity in both the college and field of engineering, the $5,000 Honda Dreams Scholarships will be awarded beginning fall 2021 to students majoring in electrical and computer engineering, industrial and systems engineering or mechanical engineering who are active in the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers or organizations with similar missions.
In an effort to advance Ohio’s homegrown engineering talent, preference will be given to central and western Ohio resident students with an interest or work experience in the automotive industry. The scholarships are renewable for up to three years, provided students maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
“This generous investment in Buckeye engineers will help ease students’ financial burden so they can focus on earning their degrees and excelling as engineers,” said David Tomasko, associate dean for undergraduate education and student services for the College of Engineering. “We are grateful for Honda’s continued commitment to The Ohio State University and our students.”
This new scholarship builds on the long-standing Honda – Ohio State Partnership, which provides scholarships for up to 120 undergraduates annually. Honda Dreams Scholarship recipients will also have the opportunity to develop relationships with Honda staff, apply for internships and co-ops, and get involved with collaborative projects at Honda and Ohio State.
The Honda-Ohio State partnership a unique collaboration that supports initiatives in education, research and public service to positively impact students, faculty, public and private sector practitioners, and the transportation industry as a whole. Honda has donated more than $68 million to Ohio State throughout the 20-year relationship, funding faculty, students and programs.
“In alignment with the strategic priorities of the Honda – Ohio State Partnership, this scholarship gift demonstrates Honda’s commitment to increasing diversity in the workforce development pipeline for Honda as well as the automotive industry as a whole,” said American Honda’s Shubho Bhattacharya, the Honda – Ohio State Partnership co-director.
