Honda Hockey League Helps Associates Realize Dreams

The associate hockey league at Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM) helps associates realize their dreams and provides them with opportunities to challenge themselves. Larger than the NHL, the recreational league provides valuable lessons that translate into a better workplace. The hockey league that plays on the campus of Honda of Canada Mfg. is featured in the latest What Makes a Honda is Who Makes a Honda video series.

Boasting more than 45 teams and 700 players, the league provides opportunities for players of all abilities, from long-time hockey players to newcomers who always wanted the opportunity to play. From formal league games to informal pick-up games, all are welcome in the league.

For HCM Senior Vice President, Bill Easdale, who has played hockey for decades, the lessons of the sport carry over to work.

“Hockey is a team sport, you need to work well together to have success,” he said. “That same team work is critical when we leave the rink and go back to work.”

David Eveleigh, PE Interior Civic Model Lead, realized his lifelong dream of playing hockey after six years at HCM when he played his first game at age 30, as a goaltender with borrowed goal equipment. “The first time I played goal, I played for an hour and I think I did all right,” said Eveleigh. “I always thought I could do it, but I never had the opportunity.”

“Ten years later, I helped the A-Division Pythons win their first championship,” he said. “That accomplishment was not mine alone. That was the true result of teamwork.”

The Who Makes a Honda video series focuses on Honda associates who live out the company’s commitment to The Power of Dreams, a global theme that encourages Honda associates to conceive ideas that will create new value for customers and society and then show the determination required to bring those dreams to life. In addition, the video series spotlights the inspiring efforts of Honda associates in their work and in the community.
